The goal of the health information technology training program at ACMC is to provide students with a foundation in the knowledge and skills necessary to earn their certification in this growing career field. Certifications are offered through both the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
Students enrolled in the health information technology training program at ACMC appreciate that the program is delivered entirely online through our web-based learning management system. Even within this virtual learning environment, however, students are still provided with a great deal of hands-on training to ensure they are well prepared for a health information technology career after graduation – training that includes the use of software tools commonly used in the medical coding field.
The training program is 20 months in length, during which time students take coursework in:
- Medical terminology
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Healthcare computer information systems
- Healthcare reimbursement
- CPT coding
- International classifications of diseases coding
- Medical laws and ethics
Through this coursework, students will engage in a variety of lectures and seminars as they become familiar with the roots, prefixes and suffixes commonly used in the medical field, as well as the correct terminology for a wide range of body systems and disorders. Students will also gain insight into the legal and ethical issues facing the healthcare industry today as they become experienced in the use of CPT coding.
At the conclusion of their health information technology training, each graduate will receive an Associate of Science degree. Not only does this degree make them eligible for professional certification, but it also proves that they are well equipped to begin their careers as entry-level professionals in the HIT field. Positions within this field typically exist in doctors’ offices, hospitals and clinics, though employment opportunities may also exist in insurance companies.
