5 reasons why getting a flu shot is important!
In Florida, the weather stays relatively warm year-round. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t catch a cold! Even worse, you don’t watch to catch the flu. The flu, or influenza, is a contagious virus. It’s a more aggressive version of the cold which affects your respiratory tract. Symptoms of the flu include headache, muscles sores, sore throat, cough, runnny nose, high fever, and flushed skin. In extreme cases, the flu may be fatal.
The CDC recommends that members of the public get a flu shot because of its severity and contagious nature. Taking the proper steps to protect yourself against common seasonal illnesses is crucial to staying healthy and happy throughout the fall and winter seasons. Plus, you can focus on school and work better. You may also help maintain a more healthy environment for others when you feel better.
October marked the start of the flu season and to take precautions against getting ill, The American College for Medical Careers (ACMC) offers you five reasons why you should get a flu shot this fall season.
1. Getting a flu shot could save your life
If you get the flu and your symptoms become very serious, you could end up in the hospital. Serious bouts of dehydration, pneumonia, sinus infections, or ear infections may occur from the flu. In some cases influenza is fatal. Getting a flu shot could significantly reduce the chances of getting the flu this season. Although getting the shot doesn’t 100% guarantee you’ll avoid the flu, you can feel safer knowing you took precautions to reduce the risk of becoming infected or infecting others.
2. It’s required if you work in healthcare facility
If you work in a healthcare facility, you may be asked to get a flu shot. Having a flu shot helps protect your patients and your work environment. You can decrease your chances of getting the flu from a patient and then spreading the contagious infection to another patient.
3. You can’t get the flu from the flu shot
Contrary to misinformation that has made the rounds in the past several years, you can’t get influenza from the flu shot. A dead version of the virus is used in the vaccine so it can’t make you ill. For a few days after you get your shot, you may have a few symptoms like a runny nose or a sore throat. Don’t worry; these symptoms won’t last long!
4. Walk-in hours are available
Going to get a flu shot doesn’t have to be a pain! Did you know that there are many convenient places you can get the flu shot with walk-in hours? Many healthcare providers and pharmacies, like Walgreens or CVS, are available for walk-in appointments. Many people also think it’s convenient to schedule an appointment with their regular doctor.
5. Help keep yourself and others healthy
If you and others in your home or work environment get the flu shot, then you have fewer chances of getting the flu and spreading it. If you and others get the flu shot, you will protect yourself and those around you. Be proactive and remember to get your flu shot so you can help maintain a safer, healthier environment for everyone.
Don’t wait! Flu season has already begun. Now is a perfect time to get your flu shot. However, make sure to check with your doctor to see if getting the flu shot is safe for you. We wish you a healthy and happy fall season!
