We asked this pillar of the Dental Assisting program some questions about her life before and outside of ACMC
On Monday, August 14, the American College for Medical Careers (ACMC) presented Katherine DeJesus with an award for being two-time faculty of the month winner! The lead instructor in the Dental Assisting program, DeJesus received this honor in June 2016 and again in June 2017—quite an accomplishment, given that she has only been at ACMC for about 18 months. In addition to her duties as lead instructor, she also assists students with placement at their externship sites once they have completed their coursework.
“Ms. DeJesus serves our students and campus by bringing new ideas and fun events that enhance learning,” says Campus Director Marsha-Ann Burrell. “She is always going the extra mile for her students, the Dental Assisting program, and American College for Medical Careers.”
Born and raised in the Bronx, New York, DeJesus attended The New York School for Medical and Dental Careers in Queens, NY. We reached out to DeJesus for some details about her life—which even her current students might not be aware of.

How did you find your way into the career of dental assisting?
When I had my first child, I needed to make sure that I could provide for her. I decided to find something I could qualify for relatively quickly. I looked into several programs, and felt that a dental assisting program was my best choice.

My palate does not discriminate. I am not afraid to try pretty much anything. That being said, one of my favorite restaurants is The Yard House, because of its variety of foods.

I would travel to Abu Dhabi.

What is your favorite thing about working at ACMC?
Teaching at ACMC has allowed me to experience growth, on a personal and a professional level. It has been a goal of mine to reach the position of lead instructor since I started my teaching career, and it gives me much pleasure to have accomplished this goal at ACMC. In the role of lead instructor, I am able to guide the Dental Assisting program in a positive direction. I have been able to discover capabilities I didn't know I had. ACMC has allowed me to push myself every day, and the more I do, the more I learn how much I am capable of within the institution. If I could reach even higher levels in my career, it would be my pleasure to do so at ACMC.
DeJesus adds, “I want to say thank you to those that have trusted me and allowed me to grow and discover. I will always be grateful!”
