A student’s life can be busy. When you are attending classes every day, doing your homework, keeping up with your assigned reading, and studying for tests, life can get overwhelming. If you add on top of that your family or home responsibilities, there’s almost no time left in the day.
One way to help carve out some more time in your day is to get more organized. Try these tips for using your time efficiently, and see if you end up with a few extra minutes to yourself. It will be worth it!
Tip 1: Be an early riser
Many people are more productive in the morning than the evening. In the morning, there tend to be fewer distractions. Try to wake up a half hour or a full hour earlier than you need to. During this time, you can organize what you need for the day, check your to-do list, eat a healthy breakfast, and maybe even fit in your exercise. This way you will start the day with a clear head.
Tip 2. Set up folders for your school subjects
Folders are an excellent way to get organized. Create a folder for each of your classes. Make sure you create paper folders, email folders, browser bookmark folders, folders on your laptop, and anywhere else where you store school information. Be sure to put papers and electronic documents in the proper folders. This will save you a good deal of time, because you will always know where things are.
Tip 3. Make use of to-do lists on your phone
Are you the type of person who creates a to-do list on the back of an envelope and then loses it? One way to keep your to-do list at your fingertips is to find an online app. Try Evernote, Any.do, Wunderlist, or Todoist. These apps are designed to make it easy to follow your list. Make sure you keep your to-do list updated, and be sure to check your list every day!
Tip 4. Keep an online calendar
Online calendars are great for planning out longer-range projects that may not go on your to-do list. At the beginning of your semester, look at your syllabus and mark in any major tests and due dates. Use the reminder feature to give yourself advance warning of these dates, so that you have time to prepare. Google Calendar is one possibility, and you can even get apps that will sync with your calendar, such as Any.do and Sunrise.
Tip 5. Increase your concentration by limiting distractions
We live in an age of constant distractions. Pings, tweets, selfies, news feeds, texts, and social media are all recent phenomena that have changed the way we work and the way we socialize. To be more productive, however, it’s a good idea to turn off these distractions. When it’s time to do your homework or time to study for a test, make sure you turn off your devices. Give yourself a good solid block of time with no distractions, and you will see how much more efficiently you get your work done.
Tip 6: Work before play! It’s a hard lesson to learn, but it’s always better to get your work done before you relax. Don’t fall into the trap of procrastinating. For example, finish your homework before you turn on the TV. This way you can get your work out of the way and enjoy your evening more.
