5 Steps to a Healthier Lifestyle

After you get home from a long day, it’s easy to gravitate toward that bag of chips or candy bar. Snacking is a nice way to unwind every once in a while, but making a habit of eating high-sugar foods won’t do any favors for your long-term health.

At the American College for Medical Careers (ACMC), we want our students and graduates to lead healthy and happy lifestyles. March is National Nutrition Month and to celebrate, ACMC is offering tips to live healthier.  

Are you looking for ways to get your health back on track or begin a healthy routine? Whether you want to start or not, reading about the benefits of healthy living may change your mind. Plus, National Nutrition Month is a perfect time to start!

Here are five tips to help you live a healthy life!

1. Exercise three times a week (at least)

Exercising at least three times a week will keep you fit and healthy. Physical activity is important to prevent heart disease and stroke, and to promote overall cardiovascular health. The American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes of exercise a week which is equal to about an hour, three times a week. If scheduling is tight, consider working out for 30 minutes for five days a week.

It might be hard to get off the couch and stay active after a long day, but you can motivate yourself by planning fun exercises like yoga, dancing, or running.  Once you become active on a regular basis, exercising will make you feel more energized and release endorphins, a chemical in your body that gives you sensations of happiness.

2. Drink water

Drinking water has numerous health benefits. The all-natural liquid, calorie free drink is better for you than high-sugar drinks like sodas and juices. It supplies nutrients and hydration to your body.

Some ways water can benefit your health includes:

  • Cleansing toxins from the body
  • Controlling calories
  • Energizing muscles
  • Balancing body fluids

Remember to drink 8 glasses—64 ounces—of water a day to get the benefits of drinking water.

3. Eat fruits and vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are packed with nutrients like vitamins and antioxidants. Nutrients will give you energy and sustenance. Antioxidants benefit eye health, the immune system, and healthy skin. The World Health Organization advises eating fruits and vegetables as a regular part of your diet to reduce the risk of diseases, some cancers, heart disease, and stroke.  Aim to eat five to nine servings of varied fruits and vegetables each day.

4. Assess your mood

Mood is an important part of your mental health and well-being. If you’re in a bad mood then you could see negative effects in interactions with others and your daily experiences. Assess how you feel daily so you can adjust your lifestyle and choices.

To help stabilize your mood:

  • Sleep 7-8 hours each day
  • Engage in social, fun activities
  • Exercise
  • Seek professional counseling if needed
  • Spend time with loved ones

5. Manage stress

Managing stress helps maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle. If you’re stressed out, make sure to relax after a long day. You can de-stress by listening to music, meditating, reading, exercising, or by watching a comedy. These activities will help release endorphins, stimulating feelings of happiness and comfort.

You’ll realize that many of these healthy habits go hand-in-hand. It’s important to follow all these steps to live healthy in all areas of your life. Take advantage of these healthy living tips so you can live life to your fullest potential!
